Avengers: Endgame Review
Rating:★★★★★ (4.5)
I expected the world from this film and going I was both excited and nervous. There are many ways that this film could have gone wrong however there are only a few that it could have gone well. There are so many heroes and just general characters that people wanted to see in this film come back after the decimation or the snappening as I like to call it. The Russos pulled it off after a slightly rough in my eyes opening to the film. I was brought to tears but I'll get back to that later in this review.
The beginning of the film was very hit or miss for me. I was getting very angsty that this film would not be the necessary answer to all my questions. There were too many easy quips and it was just quips after goddamn quip. For once in my life, I was praying this would be more of the DCU and actually some acknowledgment that everyone had just fucking died. These writers (Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely) are clearly better than most of the jokes in this film same with the directors. I thought at the beginning of the film they mistreated Professor Hulk and again just played him for cheap laughs. Another gripe of mine was how Stark and Nebula were saved by Captain Marvel. Stark literally built himself an Iron Man suit in the cave, he was in a spaceship. He should have saved himself but it was a decent way to introduce Captain Marvel to the team.
I will talk more about the negatives and then I'll praise this film. The way Ant-Man gets out of the quantum realm really aggravates me, the whole universe was saved by a rat so kudos to that rat, a lot of lives were saved. Second best rodent after Stuart Little. However, if this was written as audience subversion, I would be more on board if this was the case. I was a bit disappointed due to the fact that we didn't get more Hawkeye. His character could have been more deeply fleshed out and shown a bit more of Ronin but it feels slightly nitpicky. Time constraints admittedly for a film over 3 hours is a simple answer to this issue. Finally, I just think Captain Marvel is too overpowered. It's the Superman effect. You make someone that powerful and everything they do just seems pretty redundant but it is very refreshing that the most powerful member of the MCU is a woman.
Now onto the many good parts of this film. I enjoyed the time travel bit of the movie, I thought most of the jokes did land and there were a few nice callbacks for the viewer. The Hail Hydra Elevator joke was incredibly funny and was a very good pay off and little nod to the infamous Captain America heel turn. The fight when Thanos comes back is fucking incredible. The Avengers are putting up a tremendous fight and its a cinematic masterpiece and one of the greatest scenes from recent years. Cap lifting and using Mjolnir is also nuts and such a great moment for the film and the character. Hinted at during Age of Ultron, it's straight out of the comics and finally shows off the worthiness of this character that has been built up over the years.
When the rest of the Avengers turn up to help with the fight of Thanos is honestly one of the best scenes I've seen on film. The scene brought me to tears and it was everything I've wanted from the films. When you hear the Wakandan chants, it is iconic as the first real shot of the Avengers in the first film. All 22 of these movies have led up to this moment all the time that has been dedicated watching the movies have paid off and it's worth every second of it and every penny I have ever spent. The battle is less cliche than most previous movies that have preceded them. It is a CGI fest but what isn't nowadays. The moment between all the female Avengers is something I did think was quite a nice idea but it is just too convenient. I am all for female empowerment but it just feels too forced. It's too in your face but for every young girl, they have their heroes to look up to as men have always customarily had in the past. There are so many little callbacks and Easter eggs in this fight that I imagine every youtube must have had both massive headaches and field days.

The acting in this film is very good for the most part and I didn't notice anything really bad in this film. However, Robert Downey Jr. is outstanding and deserves at the least an Oscar nomination for this film. He carries this film and he has the most gutwrenching moments in this. He started this universe off with his Iron Man and when he uses the Infinity Gauntlet and says 'I am Iron Man' is one of my favorite callbacks to that film. However, I half expected Black Sabbath to start playing in the background which would have made me lose my shit but probably only me.
There are many things which piss me off about this film but as I said earlier this film had so much riding on it. Some of the scenes I feel would go down in cinema history. For me this is an almost perfect film but for a few of the flaws. I believe on rewatch it will only improve and add to the allure of these films and this universe.
And that is what Jenka has to say
This is a heavy, heavy spoilers review. Don't read it unless you have watched the film. I would not wish that upon anyone.
This is the 22nd film of the MCU and that sentence is just nuts to me. Star Wars was first released in 1977 and there have only been half the amount of films released. Of the top 25 highest grossing franchises of all time, only James Bond has had more films then the MCU and grossed nearly a third less than Marvel films. The 3 Avengers films so far before this one, have grossed slightly less than the whole DC universe as well as such famous franchises Jurassic Park, Batman and The Fast and the Furious. Those numbers hurt my head and they go to some way to explain what a social and commercial juggernaut these films are.
