Stranger Things Season 3 Review
Stranger Things Season 3 Review
Rating:★★★★★ (3.5)
Spoilers of course
I am a big fan of Stranger Things, when series one first came out I watched the whole series over one night. This series also broke a load of Netflix streaming records according to the company, no one really knows and these records seemed to get broken constantly so everything is taken with a pinch of salt in my eyes. On the whole, I liked this series not as much as the first one but I would say it would be on par or just below the second one. There were a few good additions to the cast and the story but the pacing for me just seemed kinda off.
Firstly, additions to this season do add new dimensions to this season. Robin played by Maya Hawke is a new fresh addition, her chemistry with Dustin and particularly Steve, are some of the best scenes of this year. The other member of the Scoops Ahoy team is Erica Sinclair. Although not a completely new addition, the characters minutes in this season were quite drastically increased. She had some of the funniest moments of the season, her comment about Erica and America made me laugh out loud at both the trueness and the ludicrosity of the comment. Mayor Kline and the Russians do not get much character development but the scenes they are in, although confusing are quite memorable especially Mayor Kline in my eyes. The terminator looking guy was just a terminator and was too on the nose for me, I prefer slier Stranger Things references, don't shove it down my throat, you're better writers than that. Sergei was another one of the innocent characters who seem to die every season, joining Barb and Bob. The relationship between Max and El is another welcome one and its good to see two young actresses bouncing off of each other
Acting in the series is usually a standout and this series is no different. Winona Ryder and Noah Schnapp are standouts from 1 and 2 in particular. This season Darce Montogomery is the true standout for me. When he was introduced in season 2, I didn't like or understand the character because he was just a stereotypical bully. However, when possessed by the mind flayer he shows more complexity and there is some deeper understanding as to why he is the way he is today. All the kids or more like young adults now deserve so much credit for their acting in this season and the previous ones. Noah Schnapp, I feel for most of this season is just wasted, he is only there to itch his neck. He is just a warning sign for the mind flayer and for the performance he gave for that season, he deserves better.
Do you remember that episode last season, when Eleven went away and met her sister, Kali. This just feels even more pointless then it did last season, if it was set up that makes sense, El needs more help with the Upside Down threats then ever before. Unless the other experimented children come back and help out in the final seasons then what was the fucking point? It's a waste of time, slowed down the whole episode. Talking of slowing down the episode, the duet between Dustin and Suzie is quite odd. I personally liked it and it was a sweet moment in a dark finale and season. It is just at the wrong time, the others are getting chased by the mind flayer and they're in a life-threatening scenario. The song is cute and Dustin and Suzie make a cute couple just a better time for that scene would have been perfect. Did Suzie kill Hopper? Is she a secret Russian spy? All big questions that I hope are answered.
Talking of Hopper, I was a bit disappointed with him. He's just toxic masculinity in a nutshell really and was just a complete jackoff this whole season. His death scene I thought was a bit obvious and the only people I think that didn't see it coming, were non watchers of the show and the blind. Regarding the post credit scene at the end, I don't think its Hop. David Harbour has said it is him and the American comment is more evidence supporting this theory. I just think it is too obvious and people will point to us not seeing the body. I believe this once many moons ago and it was about Stannis the Mannis. You all lied to me and my hopes were raised and I still haven't really recovered. My theory and hope is that it is Papa or Dr Martin Brenner. We still do not know a lot about El's backstory and everything is a bit vague. Also if Hopper is still alive in the facility and the characters find out, they're going to try and break him out which is just fucking ridiculous.
Overall, this season of Stranger Things was quite enjoyable. It had a few negatives in my eyes but there are mostly good things happening throughout. The child actors have grown up and a very good teenage actors so I hope they have more acting to do throughout the end of this series. I think that this season is a set up for the bigger end of the season whether we have one or two seasons left.
That's what Jenka has to say
If you managed to read this far well done, I know its boring that's just me. Check out my twitter @jenkasays in order to find out when these reviews go live.
