Super is a film made by James Gunn which was released in 2010 and was his 2nd film directed by him. It was also his film previous to the release of the smash hit Guardians of the Galaxy. I went into this film with high optimism that I would be significantly impressed with this film but was very disappointed.
At an honestly simple level, I just found this movie bland and odd film. Most of the jokes didn't hit for me and the film just kind of dragged along for me. Rainn Wilson (Dwight from the Office) is a literal nutcase and he just spends the whole film, looking angry and creepy. His motivations are just weak at the best of times and how he becomes a superhero is just annoying and connvenient in my eyes. Also as a note I personally cannot stand any dream sequences in any movie. When there is a dream sequence, all I can think about is when there is a next dream sequence coming which completey takes me out of the movie. Honestly, think dream sequences are just lazy writing and its just a pet hate of mine.
Ellen Page is a slight saving grace with her high octane energy adding some much needed life into this film. However, she also took part in the weirdest scene, I may have ever seen in any movie ever. The 'sex'/ 'rape' scene was honestly so confusing, I would just as uncomfortable as the actors were whilst filiming it I assume.
With most of the performances in this film, they just kinda pass the film by. How with the acting talent of Michael Rooker, Kevin Bacon and Liv Tyler can not one of them have a memorable performance. Acctually no, Liv Tyler's performance is just awful that it hurts me at points. Maybe its the script or maybe its her, I don't know but it was one of the least capitavating performances I've seen. The two aforementioned actors are genuinely just wasted in this film which hurts me.
There are some funny parts and a single decent performance but on the whole this film is just a whole load of nothing. Not much really happens throughout this movie and I would not reccomend this to anyone. Do yourself a favour and watch Guardians of the Galaxy. I would rate this 2 out of 5 as there are some decent bits in this movie but a whole load of nothing really
