Detective Pikachu Review
Rating:★★★★★ (2.5)

Pokémon Detective Pikachu teaser poster.jpgDetective Pikachu is a new film in the Pokemon universe and is another attempt at a video game universe I assume. The film stars Ryan Reynolds and Justice Smith and is a generally well-rounded fun film. The CGI in my eyes is quite beautiful and there are more upsides than downsides in this film.

The characters in this film are okay and they add partly to the storyline. The Pokemon are very cute and another reminder of the wonders of the CGI. Justice Smith is a decent lead to this film and blends well with Ryan Reynolds. The acting as a whole is pretty bland, whether that be due to a bad script or bad acting. I personally didn't like the Pikachu twist but it wasn't awful which for a video game movie is incredibly generous. I was happy to see Bill Nighy in this role and then the twist when he became the villain, it hurt me. Bill is my uncle from another time and I can't remember the last time he played a villain. I think the Mewtwo is the same one from Pokemon: The First Movie which leads me into some more positives from this movie.

Some lines in this movie and little easter eggs indicate that this film takes part in the same universe as previous Pokemon material. What happened in Kanto to Mewtwo is as said above the plot for the first movie. What I think this movie does really well is using an existing IP and making a bigger universe out of it. One of the constraints that I feel of video game movies is the need to adapt the video game world into the live action. A gamer spends tons of hours immersing themselves into the world and knows the world better than anyone. That's what I was impressed with most about of this film. Generation 6 and 7 are less well known to mainstream audiences, compared to anywhere in the Kanto region for example. This bodes well for any future movies or sequels in this universe. Psyduck is one of my favorite characters in the film and probably shows the most growth in the film. The Mr Mime scene is probably my highlight of this movie and got the most laughs in the cinema.

Now to the negatives of which there are quite a few, the Tortera twist was one of the most choreographed twists I've seen. I saw it coming a mile off and it was fucking stupid. Also, Pikachu nearly dying from a rock I think but all of the company surviving the twist really annoyed me. Don't add stakes if you don't stick by them.
