Dave- We're All Alone in this Together Review

Dave- We're All Alone in this Together Review

Rating:★★★★★ (4)

The follow up to the critically acclaimed and Mercury Award winning debut album from British rapper Dave. A fellow De Montfort University attendee like myself, Dave is one of the most popular and best rappers in the UK at the moment. An artist who speaks from the heart and makes me proud to be black as a white man.

We're all Alone is a song about all the struggles that people suffer and that is okay to suffer as there will be a better days. This is Dave at his best for me, spitting on issues that we all suffer and shows his emotional maturity and how he differs from most popular rappers nowadays who rap about fast cars and big booty bitches. Verdansk is obviously a reference to the battleground in Warzone and this is not the song for me. The song doesn't speak to me at all, it feels like a freestyle and is not my version of Dave that I want to see. Clash has a similar feel to me, it is just a pop song, a wannabe chart hitter. Will probably play in the clubs now that restrictions have been lifted but to not sound like a broken record, not what I want Dave to be.

Three Rivers is a much better song for me. Dave spitting out against things he cares about, giving a voice to people who do not have the same opportunity. For me Dave is one of the most important rappers at the moment, rapping about his life and his struggles being a black male in the UK. Black is one of the best tunes I have heard in recent years and the performance at the BRITS is one of the most empowering as it is motivating for everyone to be a better person.

System is a bit like location for me, cracking beat on a catchy song and I can see myself coming back to that song the most at most occasions. The next few songs passed me by which will result in a few marks off the album, however I cannot remember the last time I heard an album that not one song is skippable. Now my favorite song on the album and the one when I first saw it first intrigued me. James Blake and Dave are a pair that I was never expecting. However, the song works perfectly for me. It is a slow burner and is the perfect release for me. Dave spitting on a slow beat, speaking his mind, the mm builds throughout the song  and is the perfect way to end the album. Heart Attack is another song where Dave is at his best for me. As I have said previously, speaks about what matters to him. It will probably never be a catchy or a song that will chart but speaking from your heart and rapping about important shit and if that resonates someone, is the beauty of music and can lead Dave to be a voice of his generation.

We're All Alone in this Together is a very good album, I believe if this was the debut album, I would look upon it much more favorably. Psychodrama is a near perfect album with many songs that are perfect. We're All Alone doesn't reach the same heights but that is compared to a Mercury Prize winner. For a 23 year old to be so raw and open, is admirable beyond belief and is the reason why Dave is so highly regarded in the UK music scene.

And that is what Jenka has to say.
