Phase 1 MCU tierlist

I am doing a tier list for the MCU films. As a nerd growing up and being teased for it, there is nothing better then the biggest films of all time being based on a comic books that I have read as a kid. Obviously there are fucking hundreds and thousands of these films so I have split them up in to different parts. The natural order is Phase 1, Phase 2, Phase 3.

A: Avengers. This was one of the main films that really had to be good. A team up of a shared universe was something that had not really been done before. Obviously every knows about the third act and the big laser firing into the sky but this film is genuinely funny. Loki's plan in the film is dumb but works as a villain and there are some iconic moments in this. The 360 of the Avengers is great and Banner turning into Hulk and punching the Chitauri whale. The only negative of the main characters is how dirty they did Hawkeye in the film and that is a trend that continues. It is bordering on S but due to the fact of the quality that comes after is why it is in A.

B:Iron Man. I said Avengers was one of the films that had to be good but this is the main one that really had to be good. There are so many studios that have tried for film franchises and the first film was awful and this has been scrapped. Robert Downey Jr is Tony Stark and is perfect in this and most subsequent. Obadiah State could have been a good villain but is greatly wasted and would have been a better villain in later sequels. I think Iron Man does a great job at setting up universes and has some good moments but looking back it is good but not great.

D: Thor. Phase 1 Marvel was very much a company trying to find the right formula. I do not necessarily think they are bad movies in here but compared to the consistency of the later MCU films they are just lacking. Thor is a ridiculous property and they did a good job bringing a Norse God to life. However, Chris Hemsworth's eyebrows terrify my dreams, Frost Giants are merely a subplot pretending to be a main villain and Kat Dennings is very annoying as Darcy. Odin is a very bad dad, pitting his two children against each other is not quite it, Jane and Thor have literally no chemistry with each other, with their scenes being some of the most boring of the whole movie. Oh I also fell asleep during Thor so that says it all.

Incredible Hulk. Coming into this rewatch of MCU, I thought this was movie was abysmal but I was pleasantly surprised. It's bad but not as bad as I remember it. Its a weird ass and a boring start to the film and the lighting on this is just so dark. It takes an hour and a half for abomination to finally come. This can be okay in certain situations but I cannot remember anything else happening in the mean time. The final battle is a limit of its time, a CGI fest with nothing particularly interesting added. I would be interested to see a Hulk solo movie made now. Obviously the action has mostly been done before but with new technology, pretty much all things are possible.

Iron Man 2. Another bad film and one that has a weird opening, maybe an omen for later films. Iron man adapts devil in a bottle partly and I think it has all the promising aspects of a good movie but none of the product. Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer is great and is a good antithesis of Tony but Mickey Rourke is just odd as Whiplash. Apparently, a lot of the performance was left on the cutting room floor so it begs the question as I have always said #releasethefavreaucut. Not the catchiest hashtag but I will constantly tweet it. Theres also an awful eye pun in this film but I don't remember where or when so I know its there somewhere but not sure where.

Captain America: The First Avenger. I hate this film. It doesn't feel right in the MCU, it is the odd one out and not in the good way. Chris Evans is very, very off-putting as Steve Rogers before the serum. Its awful CGI and his head scares me and haunts my dreams. Theres a weird chase after the soldier steals the serum that looks like it has been lifted straight off a video game from the early 2000s. Red Skull is boring, Captain America is probably the most boring character in the whole film and Peggy is wasted. So not a great collection of all of it. On the whole, shit film.

This is my Phase 1 tier list, onto Phase 2.
