Phase 2 tierlist
S: Guardians of the Galaxy. Another great and funny film in the MCU. By far the weirdest film of the MCU so far and this movie only demonstrated that Marvel could make anything with any property and it would make a billion. All of the Guardians are great and Michael Rooker is really great in this. I think this film so far in the universe is the best combination and versions of the characters. Rocket isn't too much of a jackass and Drax is funny whilst having some seriousness and not just comic relief. The only negatives are that Ronan is a pretty underwhelming villain and quite tedious and I have no care for Xandar and not bothered with the imminent destruction. Otherwise wholly enjoyable.
Captain America: The Winter Solider. One of the biggest improvements in sequel. A perfect change to the new and more interesting Captain America. Cap and Black Widow are a match made in heaven and this is more of a comic book movie. It is a spy thriller trapped inside comic book characters. Robert Redford is great in this and somehow manages to make a Nazi death cult relatable. The car chase scene with Fury is a great scene, beautiful shot and climaxing intensely with the perfect introduction of the Winter Soldier. A great film and everyone knows how important the Russos would be for the rest of this shit.
B: Avengers: Age of Ultron. Its probably the weakest of the Avengers movies but it is not a bad film. It is just congested and trying to do too much. Opening of the film is probably the best scene of this film and is one of the first and few times of the Avengers kicking ass in unison and as a team. There's some good ideas here but it is trying to set up future films for all the Avengers, being a good sequel and adding more lore whilst being a good film as well. It is a case of too many chefs ruining a bake. Hulkbuster scene is the great but the spiral scene in Sokovia is a CGI fest but has a few good shots. Quicksilver has about 5 lines and 3 of them are you did not see this coming. Short-lived but fun, a bit like Scarlet Witch's accents in later films.
Ant-Man. I'm Higher on this film than most of the other lists I've seen but this is a fun film. Is it going to pose some deep philosophical questions? No. Are you going to have a good time whilst watching Paul Rudd do his thing? Absolutely. Paul Rudd is Paul Rudd and we all know, he always brings the charm in whatever he does. Its funny at times and the transformations are cool and innovative. Luis is a great side character but the rest of the crew including T.I are very odd. Yellowjacket is still in the generation of boring and bland villains, who are like the main character of the film but evil and more annoying.
Iron Man 3. Just a mediocre film which tried to do something which was completely doubled back on by Marvel. Very much a Shane Black film but not a good one. Nothing of any note really happens until Stark challenges the 'mandarin', which is a dumb fucking idea. It has a few cool ideas but most of the ideas were gotten rid of in later movies. The only lasting impact of this film is Harvey Keener appearing in the Endgame funeral scene. I think Tony is better in the Avengers in a more subdued role than his own solo films.
Thor: Dark World. Another movie and another attempt at trying to figure out Thor, which doesn't hit. The whole movie feels like exposition, trying to set up the infinity stones, which did work out in the long run. There feels like no character development, but I dislike Darcy, Chris O'Dowd and his weird scene and appearance and I hate Jane and Thor together so probably not the worst for me. Malekith is the worst villain in the MCU and trust me there are a lot to chose from in Phase 2 and Phase 1 and a few sneak into Phase 3. I still don't know his motive or anything about him. But he's played by Chris Eccleston so that's cool.
